sunrise HBM Series

SUNRISE
Horizontal Bending Machine

The Sunrise HBM is a horizontal bending machine — also called a horizontal press brake or horizontal bender — built for the work a conventional press brake handles badly: short, thick, heavy parts.

The punch is fixed and the die moves horizontally into the work, so material can wrap completely around the punch. Available in 45 and 82 ton models bending flat bar to 12″ × 1/2″, in stock in Belcamp, Maryland.

What is a HBM – Horizontal Bending Machine?

On a traditional press brake the die is fixed and the punch moves down into it. The HBM reverses that: the punch is fixed and the die moves horizontally into the material. Material is able to wrap completely around the fixed bending punch, so tight profiles, column supports, U-shapes and 180° bends can be lifted off.

The moving die closes the last leg around the post. One more bend, and a full box is formed.

All the tonnage, in a few inches

A press brake spreads its rated tonnage across a long bed. The HBM does the opposite: it puts the full force of the machine into a bend area of only 8-12″. That is why a compact 45 or 82 ton machine handles short, thick work that would otherwise demand a far larger brake — and why there is no crowning to dial in and no multiple axes to align.

“The benefit of the HBM is all of the tonnage focused on a small area… You don’t need to worry about crowning or aligning multiple axes like you do on bigger press brakes.” — Ben Flamholz, The Fabricator, October 2025

HBM:Features

Standard Features

  • One-piece machined table

The table is machined from a single piece with the cylinder mounted on top, so tooling alignment holds up under repeated heavy bends instead of drifting.

  • No crowning, single centered cylinder

Force comes from one cylinder in the middle of the bend area — nothing to crown and no multiple axes to keep in alignment.

  • Open tooling pattern

Multiple machined holes across the table let you mount additional dies, fixtures and shop-made tooling, so the machine adapts to the job rather than the other way round.

  • Tooling changes in minutes

Tooling is smaller and lighter than press brake tooling, so a changeover is a short job for one person rather than a production stoppage.

  • Two-hand control or locked foot pedal

Run it either way depending on the part — both hands clear for short pieces, or a pedal when the work needs holding.

  • Name-brand hydraulics and electrics

Components you can source locally when something eventually needs replacing, backed by stocked parts and factory-trained technicians in Belcamp, MD.

Optional Features

  • CNC back gauge, 1 m or 2 m

Positions to ±0.004″ at 40 ft/min, stores 99 programs of 10 bends and retracts to clear the workpiece. Retrofits to an HBM-45 or HBM-82 at any time.

  • Press brake tooling adapters

Adapters let the HBM accept American and European press brake tooling, so punches and dies already in your racks can go to work on this machine instead of being bought twice. Send us what you have and we will tell you what adapts.

  • Tooling beyond the gauge — hard way, 180° and pipe clamp, pipe and solid bar, single and multi-vee dies, punching, shearing, and custom tools built to the part — is listed with its capacity alongside the work it does.

If it needs to be bent, ask.

The work above is what we are asked for most — it is not a list of what the machine can do. Tooling gets designed around the part. We have bent 20-foot aluminum trailer tubing, pipe clamps to a customer’s own inside diameter, and profiles nobody else would quote, because someone asked. If your part is not on this page, send us a drawing or a photo and we will tell you whether there is a tool for it.

Hydraulic bending machine helps expand business, improve processes. Bending small parts on a traditional press brake can be challenging because…

HBM:Case Study

Buss Bar, Brackets, and more!

Step 1Sunrise APS Plate Processing System+Step 2Sunrise HBM Horizontal Bender

The Sunrise APS punches and shears flat bar automatically — up to 12″ wide, straight from a DXF or NC1 file, with no layout at the bench. The Sunrise HBM takes it from there and bends it. Both machines handle flat bar to the same 12″ width, so a blank that comes off the APS goes straight onto the bender and off as a finished bracket, clip or cleat — without either operation touching your press brake.

On the APS

Punch and shear, automatically

Holes and length come off the plate system nested and repeatable, from the detailing file rather than a tape measure.

On the HBM

Bend and form

The blank lies flat on the table, multiple bends are programmed and repeated part to part.

Result

Finished part, brake untouched

Brackets, clips, cleats and column boots in production quantity without tying up a 10′ press brake on a 4″ part.

Steel brackets, clips and offset parts punched on a Sunrise APS and bent on a Sunrise HBM horizontal bender

Punched, then bent. Brackets, offsets, clips and long hole-to-hole bars — the holes go in on the APS, the bends come off the HBM, and the parts arrive at assembly finished.

“We found that the sample run on the machine nearly doubled our capacity on average.”

Joseph Rashleigh, Plant Engineer, Amerex Corp. — running flat bar through a Sunrise APS and forming brackets on the HBM. As told to FFJournal.

HBM:Frequently Asked Questions

What is a horizontal bending machine?

The die moves horizontally against a fixed punch mounted on a machined table, instead of a punch coming down from above like a press brake. The part lies flat on the table, so short, thick and awkward pieces are easy to hold and repeat — the work a vertical brake handles badly. It is sometimes called a horizontal press brake or a horizontal bender.

How is it different from a press brake?

A press brake is built for long sheet and plate, with its tonnage spread across the bed. The HBM is built for heavy, small-section work — flat bar, solid bar and pipe — with its full force concentrated in a bend a few inches wide. Shops typically run one alongside a press brake rather than instead of it.

Can it make bends a press brake cannot?

Yes, and that is the main reason shops buy one. Because the punch is fixed and the die moves into it, material can wrap completely around the punch. Closed boxes, tight U-shapes and 180° bends are routine on the HBM and impossible on a vertical brake, where the punch has to withdraw along the same path it entered.

Can the HBM bend flat bar the hard way?

Yes, with optional hard way tooling, to 2″ × 1/2″ and typically to 90°. Bending bar on edge is awkward on a vertical press brake because there is little material in contact with the tooling and the bar wants to roll out of position. On the HBM the tooling pushes the bar around a fixed post and holds it on both sides through the stroke, so it stays where you put it.

How can a 45 or 82 ton machine handle work a much larger brake would need?

Because of where the force goes. A press brake spreads its rated tonnage across a long bed, so a short, thick part demands a very large machine to get enough force into a few inches. The HBM puts its full capacity into a short bend instead, which is also why there is no crowning to dial in and no multiple axes to align.

What size pipe can it bend, and to what radius?

Pipe tooling handles up to 2″ Sch. 40. The minimum centerline radius is 3× the pipe outside diameter — on 2″ Sch. 40, whose OD is 2.375″, that works out to roughly a 7-1/8″ centerline radius. Solid round bar runs on the same tooling.

HBM-45 or HBM-82, which do I need?

Start with your widest flat bar. The 45 ton handles 8″ × 1/2″ with a 10″ stroke; the 82 ton handles 12″ × 1/2″ with a 14″ stroke. If your work sits near the top of the 45 ton range, the 82 gives room and a longer stroke for deeper forms.

What tooling is included, and can I use what I already have?

Every HBM ships with a 3″ single-vee die and bending punch, and the table has multiple machined holes for additional tooling. Hard way, 180°, pipe, solid-bar, punching and shearing tooling are all available, and custom tooling is built to the part when a job needs it. Adapters also let the machine accept American and European press brake tooling, so if you already have punches and dies in the shop, send us the details and we will tell you what will adapt.

Do I need the CNC back gauge?

A manual gauge is standard and fine for one-offs and short runs. The CNC gauge, in 1 m or 2 m, positions to ±0.004″ at 40 ft/min, stores 99 programs of 10 bends and retracts to clear the workpiece. It retrofits to an HBM-45 or HBM-82 at any time, so it is not a decision you are locked out of at purchase.

How much training does an operator need?

Far less than a CNC press brake. The control is an OMRON touchscreen with jog mode for setup rather than CAD-driven programming, there is no crowning or multi-axis alignment to manage, and tooling is small and light enough to change in minutes. A full training video walks through setup, programming and tooling changes.

How repeatable is it?

Stroke repeats to ±0.04″, held by a Mitutoyo digital linear encoder and proximity sensors rather than a mechanical stop. With the CNC back gauge, part positioning is held to ±0.004″. Material still varies, so an experienced operator confirms the first part, but the machine returns to the same place every stroke.

What power and floor space does it need?

Both run on 3-phase 220/480 in a footprint of roughly 3.5 by 2 feet, at a 37″ working height. The HBM-45 is 5 HP at 2,275 lb; the HBM-82 is 7.5 HP at 4,600 lb.

The sunrise machine is a workhorse

It serves its purpose, day in and day out– I don’t have to worry about it. If we do run into an issue, it’s important how quickly I can get my machine back online. So the fact that I’m able to just make a phone call to Trilogy and get the support I need to get us back up and running says a lot.
